129 Days

Featured, Thoughts + Opinion

After today that’s what’s left for 2020. 129 days until January 1st, 2021.

It’s not difficult to find a piece of thoughtware or a meme begging for this year to end. The most consistent topic I have seen is the hatred for the mere existence of the year 2020. And I can’t fault anyone for feeling that way. It has been surreal at times living through the challenges and headlines that have accompanied this pass around sun.

Falling into frustration, despair, or apathy has seemingly never been easier in the modern era. That’s what you’re supposed to be feeling. Just look around – it certainly feels justified. I feel it too, it’s palpable.

Ryan Holiday does a wonderful job of synthesizing and simplifying the concepts of Stoicism and great thinkers before us. The most important lesson I have gleaned and attempted to enact in my daily life is the concept of focusing on what you can control. Fate will throw unforeseen and unyielding challenges toward us. And even in those moments we can control our reaction and how we approach those moments.

“You have power over your mind – not outside events. Realize this, and you will find strength.”

This post is to serve 2 purposes:

  1. To offer a reminder for all of us to pause, reflect, and focus on what you can control and push forward in any given moment – in a sea of doubt that is always a winning strategy
  2. To mark the beginning of the 129 Days of Change series at Grit + Dynamite

After today, we all have 129 days left in the year 2020. Time is precious, cannot be created, and marches on unflinchingly regardless of any events – local or Cosmic.

The 129 day series looks to create meaning and growth in that window of time. To face an unfavorable year and an relenting force with a focus mind and open heart. We will post something every single day from now until the end of the year.

It’s frequency will not diminish the quality – we will only ever share things that are ready to be shared, that are well intentioned, and that are authentic. Anything less would be a disservice to both you and us.

There will be a lot of ups and downs with this effort, and these changes are not just exclusive to Grit + Dynamite – I hope to undergo a lot of personal growth and accomplishments during this same period, hopefully something you’ll find value in when intermittently shared. I hope too that other members of The Group will stop by to share some reflections, and that you are inspired to make some changes for yourself as well.

There is no right or wrong plan, but I would say there is a lot at stake. Because it’s the same thing that’s always at stake – how will you choose to spend the time you have in this blink of an existence, and even closer, this glimmer before we see the end to 2020 we seem to so desperately seek?

I don’t know what will come from any of this, but this is the best possible time to challenge myself to grow. To challenge all of us to be better and to be the people we want to be. Because we are faced with an unpleasant reality that we can triumph over. And it’s the best possible time because we can face Fate how we choose, and because the time is right now.

See you tomorrow.

Open Letter from Grit + Dynamite

How to start….hmmm….I guess I can just start? Probably the best way is just to start writing. Yep…just start. I think a lot of people often give that advice – just take action and you’ll find yourself along the way. Seems to be working so far? If you’re reading this

They Lied About The Grass

By most metrics, I have a good job. I am compensated competitively, I have an uncommon amount of autonomy and schedule flexibility, and I have very few people I report to and have to interact with. I work at a small business that is technically a start-up, which increases my

A Walk Through A Garden Of Eden

There are places that, when traveled to, enhance our experience of life. Fantasies about Michelin rated meals, historic landmarks, and sun soaked beaches – things we plan long in advance to take a break from our day to day lives. Sometimes while on these trips, we have experiences that don’t

I wanted today to be a little more brief. I want to mention 2 things I’ve been thinking about the last couple of days, then spend the rest of the day coming up with ideas for future topics and how to keep creating things I want to and that you
